Spinal Abnormalities in NF1

Investigators

Principal Investigator: Dr. J.M. Friedman
Co-Investigator: Dr. L. Armstrong

The Friedman Lab, at the UBC Department of Medical Genetics, located at BC Children's Hospital, is participating in a study run by Dr. David Viskochil at the University of Utah. The aim of the project is to study the clinical history of spine problems, such as scoliosis, in children with NF1. This is a four year study that will look at the best ways to diagnose and treat these problems.

The study will involve following about 20 children in BC over a four year period. The children will have clinical examinations, blood and urine tests, and various imaging procedures including x-ray, MRI, CT, DXA, and pQCT. These procedures are all described in more detail in the consent form.

To enter the study, children must have neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and be between 6 and 9 years old at the beginning of the study, and not have entered puberty or have had any previous spine surgery.
